Helium Mobile Hotspots are being launched in Mexico through a partnership between Telefonica and Nova Labs, a developer of decentralized wireless communication technology. According to Telefonica, the solution would improve overall mobile coverage service for users by expanding Telefonica’s coverage and enabling the offloading of mobile data to the Helium Mobile Network.

Boosting Internet Access via Hotspots

Telecom Infra Project (TIP) produced the OpenWiFi standard, which Telefonica and Nova Labs, which Telefonica’s Corporate Venture Capital vehicle for strategic investments, reportedly built a solution based on. With the use of their Movistar SIM cards for verification, a limited group of Movistar subscribers in Mexico may now access the Helium Mobile Network.

Helium Hotspot

Helium Mobile Hotspots are linked to Telefonica’s proprietary management system, according to a press release. This system regulates customers’ automatic access to the Helium Mobile Network for mobile data sessions, retains complete control, and checks the status of helium hotspot before permitting access and downloading data over the Helium Mobile Network. The technology, which can be implemented internationally and utilized by any operator, integrates the coverage of Helium Mobile Network with the main cellular network.

Telefonica emphasized that Helium Mobile Hotspots enable a community of individuals and small business owners to deploy Helium Mobile Hotspots and allow Telefonica to accelerate coverage growth while maintaining high-quality customer service. This reduces the costs associated with telecommunications infrastructure.
