The (Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands) KLI Submarine Cable was successfully completed, boosting internet access for the remote Lakshadweep Islands, according to NEC Corporation and NEC India.

The completion of the optical submerged cable system for BSNL, which connects Kochi and the Lakshadweep Islands in Southern India, was announced today by NEC India and NEC Corporation. The government of India’s Digital India Mission led to the development of the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Cable (KLI), which guarantees digital access to the isolated islands, enhancing their social and economic life.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) carried out the project, which was funded by the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) under the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. The Prime Minister of India just inaugurated the project.

The system, which is around 1,870 kilometers long, has a 2×100 Gbps starting capacity that can be increased to 1,600 Gbps per fiber pair. BSNL awarded this project to NEC India in September 2021, and the business finished the project ahead of time in June 2023.

The system links the eleven Lakshadweep islands—Agatti, Andrott, Amini, Bangaram, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Kiltan, Kelpeni, and Minicoy—with Kochi, a significant port city in India. According to reports, the system offers sufficient capacity for data and Voice communication.

The successful completion of the KLI cable project, our second venture with BSNL, signifies a critical turning point in NEC’s cooperation with the Government of India towards creating a connected nation, stated Aalok Kumar, Corporate Officer and Senior VP-Head of the Global Smart City Business at NEC Corporation, as well as President and CEO of NEC Corporation India. This project not only places Lakshadweep on the map digitally but also stimulates the socioeconomic development of the area.”

Chennai Andaman Nicobar Islands (CANI) System

According to NEC, the KLI cable project comes after an optical undersea cable system that connected Chennai, India, with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in December 2020 was successfully completed. The Chennai Andaman Nicobar Islands (CANI) Optical Fiber Cable Project connects Chennai to Port Blair, the islands of Havelock, Little Andaman (Hutbay), Car Nicobar, Kamorta, the Great Nicobar Islands, Long Island, and Rangat. It spans around 2,300 kilometers using 100 Gbps optical waves.
