MTS provides 40% faster internet and wider coverage, improving the Moscow Metro experience.

MTS Finishes Moscow Metro’s Mobile Network Upgrade. A significant phase of MTS’s (Mobile TeleSystems) mobile network upgrade in the Moscow Metro has been finish. As a result, regular internet speed on the MTS Network increased by 40% year over year in December, and the volume of data traffic increased by one third. MTS announced in an official statement on Friday that it has made sure high-speed mobile internet connectivity is always available in tunnels, lobbies, and crossings on all lines and metro stations.

Upgraded Network

As per MTS, the process of network upgrade required installing new equipment and laying radiating cable in tunnels within its jurisdiction in phases. After the two-year expansion, MTS added over 700 more base station blocks and extended its radiating cable to nearly 200 km by the end of 2023. According to the corporation, as part of this expansion, 14 new metro stations on the Bolshaya Ring, Solntsevskaya, and Lublinsko-Dmitrovskaya lines opened this year.

Carrier Aggregation Enabled

MTS stated that it activated Carrier Aggregation (CA) by merging all LTE frequency bands, including 800/1800/2100/2600 MHz, in order to achieve maximum data transfer rates. Maximum data transfer rates of 500 Mbps at stations and 250 Mbps in tunnels were the results of this.

Approximately 2.8 million of our users access mobile Internet in the Moscow metro on a daily basis. For them, having access to the Internet allows them to make the most of their time while traveling by reading books or the news, transferring information, making payments, enjoying music, and even viewing high-definition films. According to MTS, “Our users are actively utilizing these opportunities.”

Future upgrades

The telecom said, “Our predictions indicate that traffic will keep increasing as a result of both Internet usage and the expansion of the subway system. We adhere to plans for growing the transportation network, and we have given ourselves the goal of connecting the new Troitskaya line station and optimizing certain parts of the current network in 2024, which will call for innovative solutions.”

Increase in Volumes of Data Traffic

The Russian operator also provided information about the volume of data traffic, pointing out that the weekly volume of data traffic in the Moscow subway’s MTS Network hit a record high of 1100 TB in December 2023. This is more than the weekly Internet traffic in a million-person city like Nizhny Novgorod or Voronezh, or even a highly populated area like the Smolensk, Kursk, or Lipetsk regions.

Voice traffic has improved as a result of the infrastructure’s enhanced growth and upgrade; according to MTS, voice traffic over VoLTE (Voice over LTE) will rise by about 60% in 2023.
